Welcome to The Trout Line Newsletter! This is our Tualatin Valley Trout Unlimited Chapter newsletter that will be coming out twice a month on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month.

 
Christmas for Coho (C4C) Since 2010
 

In 2010 the Tualatin Valley chapter of Trout Unlimited began an innovative program that both provides a public service and benefits Oregon native fisheries – Christmas for Coho (C4C).  This program offers the community the opportunity to help enhance fishery habitat by dropping off their old Christmas trees for placement in streams from the coast to the Cascades.
 
TVTU had sites in the Necanicum River watershed ready for trees in 2010 and had its first collection in 2011 at Northwest Fly Fishing Outfitters in Portland OR. In 2012 Royal Treatment Fly Fishing in West Linn OR was added as a collection site. C4C was recognized by Field and Stream magazine as a Hero for a Day 2014: Collecting Christmas Trees for Cohos in Oregon, “Volunteers with the Tualatin (sic) chapter of Trout Unlimited collected hundreds of Christmas trees from Portland residents after the holiday season and gave them new life as woody habitat for Coho salmon. These dedicated anglers shrugged off nasty winter weather so they could help improve conditions for an iconic fish of the Pacific Northwest.”
 
Now as a joint project of the Tualatin Valley and Clackamas River Chapters of Trout Unlimited, Christmas for Coho volunteers collect Christmas trees each January. Once deposited the trees quickly provide shade and shelter for juvenile fish and the invertebrates that they feed on.  To date over 3,000 trees have been put into backwaters, beaver ponds, and wetlands to help enhance the Tualatin Valley, Clackamas River and Necanicum River watersheds for the benefit of wild and native salmon, sea run trout, and steelhead. The results have been amazing!  Thousands of young salmon, sea run trout, and steelhead have been observed feeding and hiding among the trees, and no doubt this habitat enhancement is helping young fish thrive during the critical rearing period before they swim out to the ocean.
 

Meetings Location and Dates

Regular chapter meetings are held at the Old Market Pub 6959 SW Multnomah Blvd., Portland, OR 97223.  Food and beverage available.  Social get together starts at 6:30pm and speaker starts at 7:00pm unless otherwise noted in the newsletter or website.
