THE TROUT LINE

October 7, 2019

Welcome to The Trout Line Newsletter! This is our Tualatin Valley Trout Unlimited Chapter newsletter that will be coming out twice a month on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month.

Upcoming Outing

October 18-20 Crooked River

*Note: This could be cancelled due to the weather please keep checking back for updates.

Our outings are multi-day campouts on some of Oregon's more scenic and productive waters. Meet other members and learn or share fishing techniques. Evening gatherings are encouraged and the trips often involve one evening where the chapters provide an entree course for a potluck-style barbecue dinner - so share your favorite side dish or dessert with others and enjoy reveling in the stories of the day!

Reservations/RSVP are not required but are appreciated. Contact Andy Andrews (andrewsclga@gmail.com) for additional information and directions if needed! Please join us! We are camping at Fall River Campgrounds, everybody is responsible for their own campground site.

Come Join Us on the Board!

Your Tualatin Valley TU Chapter could use a couple of additional Board members.  The job description is pretty simple.  The Board meets monthly at 6 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month (some months with no meeting needed) in the downstairs meeting room at the American Legion Hall in Tigard.  Meetings usually last an hour or a bit more.  TVTU has been quite successful in recent years, with projects such as the Christmas for Coho efforts and with good attendance at effective and entertaining Chapter meetings held most months at the Lucky Lab in Multnomah Village.  But we can always use fresh energy and fresh ideas.  If you are interested and would like to come to one of the Board meetings to test the water (barbless hook only), please contact Mike Gentry at  michaelgentry04@comcast.net or (503) 636-0061.  This is a feel-good volunteer opportunity.

Meetings Location and Dates

Regular chapter meetings are held at the Lucky Labrador Public House 7675 SW Capitol Hwy. Portland, OR 97219 (503) 244-2537.  Food and beverage are available.  Social get together starts at 6:30 pm and the formal meeting starts at 7:00 pm unless otherwise noted in the newsletter or website.

October Meeting - October 9, 2019 - Brian Marz from the Orvis Portland shop. Topic: Oregon's Fly Fishing Mecca

In Oregon, there are many river valleys, and many highways and towns are oriented along with them. An example is the McKenzie River; where you have the McKenzie Highway following it, and several towns located within the river valley. Another example is Maupin where you have a town located at the lower Deschutes, and the culture is all about the river.  The one thing Oregon seems to lack is a hub or mecca for fly fishing; where you have a town like Missoula, Montana, and the Clark Fork, Bitterroot, Blackfoot, Rock Creek, etc.

The city of Oakridge is actually Oregon's Fly Fishing Mecca or Hub, and if you aren't aware of it, you need to come to this month's chapter meeting. Oakridge has been deemed the Mountain Biking Capital of the Northwest, and it needs another title for being the Fly Fishing Hub or Mecca of Oregon. Orvis Portland's Fishing Manager Brian Marz has been fly fishing the Oakridge area for almost 25 years, and he is going to share with you the wide array of options for fly fishing this wonderful majestic area.
