Welcome to The Trout Line Newsletter! This is our Tualatin Valley Trout Unlimited Chapter newsletter that will be coming out twice a month on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month.

Outing to Lost Lake

As I crossed the coast range, elevation 1625 feet on my way to Lost Lake, the weather was proving it was going to be an interesting day. It was April 14th and yet my windshield wipers were clearing snow from the windshield. By the time I reached the lake the weather had changed to a light drizzle of rain. At the lake, I met Ryan, the only other TU member to show for the outing. I had passed several cars on the road in and they had said the fishing was red hot. By the time I geared up, including four layers to ward off the cold weather, the report from those already on the lake was that the bite had died about an hour earlier. Another clear example that once the fish find out that Andy is on the water, they run and hide.

Kidding aside, a lot of fish were jumping from the lake, but not bugs could be seen that they might be feeding on. I had a number of small taps as if the fish were just playing around with me, and I did hook three fish, however I did not get any to the net. While sitting in my tube in the back part of the lake, I did see a large, hefty steelhead swim by and in the back of my head I heard the theme from 'Jaws' being played. You can never be sure what species of fish the state has released into that lake.

There was no sunshine when we were on the lake, but on the good side we had almost no rain or wind. Ryan did call me ashore at one point to join him in a lunch he had prepared. This was much appreciated by me as I am usually the one cooking for others. My day came to an end when a strap holding by fin to my booties broke, putting me without power to propel my tube. I thanked Ryan for sharing his lunch and attendance on the outing and return to Portland.

Out next outing is a weekend adventure, May 3rd - 5th, to South Twin Lake, near Sun River.

Come Join Us on the Board!

Your Tualatin Valley TU Chapter could use a couple of additional Board members. The job description is pretty simple. The Board meets monthly at 6 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month (some months with no meeting needed) in the downstairs meeting room at the American Legion Hall in Tigard. Meetings usually last an hour or a bit more. TVTU has been quite successful in recent years, with projects such as the Christmas for Coho efforts and with good attendance at effective and entertaining Chapter meetings held most months at the Lucky Lab in Multnomah Village. But we can always use fresh energy and fresh ideas. If you are interested and would like to come to one of the Board meetings to test the water (barbless hook only), please contact Mike Gentry at michaelgentry04@comcast.net or (503) 636-0061. This is a feel-good volunteer opportunity.

Regular chapter meetings are held at the Lucky Labrador Public House 7675 SW Capitol Hwy. Portland, OR 97219 (503) 244-2537. Food and beverage available. Social get together starts at 6:30 pm and formal meeting starts at 7:00 pm unless otherwise noted in the newsletter or website.

May Meeting - May 8 - Josh Linn from Royal Treatment Fly Shop - Salmon Fly

Salmon fly, the ribeye of the sky

Description-

Josh has been fishing the salmon fly hatch for over 20 years. Over that time he’s come up with some tips and tricks to become more successful. His presentation is focused on changing tactics and breaking old habits. Forget what you think about the salmon fly hatch, throw that old play book out, we’re starting over.

Bio:

Josh is a native Oregonian. His father introduced him to fly fishing at a young age. Over the years he has been mentored by a great many anglers and that influence has turned him into a respected angler, guide, and instructor. He has taught hundreds of people to cast and guided many anglers into to their first steelhead.

Josh has spent the better part of the past 20 years chasing steelhead throughout the Pacific Northwest and remote places in the world. During that time he has guided and fished many rivers including the Infamous River X in Alaska, the Deschutes and the Sandy rivers in Oregon as well as more distant locations such as Russia and Los Roques Venezuela

Over the past decade Josh has worked with major manufacturers such as Rio and G Loomis to develop fly fishing tackle. Recently, Josh held a position at G Loomis as the their National Fly Fishing Sales Manager. Currently, he has a managing role at Royal Treatment Fly Fishing. If you are ever looking for Josh you’ll find him in one of two places, the fly shop or on the river chasing steelhead.
