Fly of the Month - Ostrich Herl Callibaetis Emerger

Written by Mike Gentry

Hook:        Tiemco 5263, size 12-16
Thread:     Tan 8/0
Tail:           Orange/tan turkey flat fibers
Rib:           Fine copper wire
Shellback: Orange/tan turkey flat fibers
Abdomen: Orange/tan ostrich herl
Wingcase: Orange/tan turkey quill fibers
Legs:         Orange/tan turkey quill fibers

1. Tie in a tail of three turkey flat fibers, split left, right and center.  They should be about half the length of the body.

2. Tie in a length of copper wire at the tie-in point of the tail and let it extend off the back of the fly.

3. Tie in, tip first, four longish turkey flat fibers at the tie-in point of the tail and let them extend off the back of the fly.

4.  Tie in, tip or small end first, two ostrich herl fibers at the tie-in point of the tail and wind them tightly to about 2/3 of the way to the eye.  Tie them off at the point with three wraps of thread but DON'T trim them off - just pull them off to the side out of the way.  What you have just created is the "body" and you'll use the remaining herl later to create the "thorax".

5.  Pull the longish turkey fibers forward over the top of the fly and tie off and trim at the front of the body.

6. Wind the copper ribbing four or five turns over the body to the front of the body and tie off and trim.

7. Tie in, tip first, six turkey flat fibers at the front of and on the top side of the body and let them extend back out of the way over the rear of the fly.

8.  Wind the ostrich herl tightly to just behind the eye, to create the thorax, and tie off and trim.

9.  Pull the six turkey fibers over the top of the thorax, widening and flattening them out so they are a "shell" over the top of the thorax, and tie off and trim just behind they.  Optional: put a small drop of fleximent or quick-drying epoxy on the "shell' and let it dry.

10.  Just behind the eye, tie in four legs (two on either side but on the top half of the fly) of turkey flat fibers.  The legs should extend just short of the back of the body.

11.  Wind a small head of thread just behind the eye and secure with a small drop of head cement.
