Welcome to The Trout Line Newsletter! This is our Tualatin Valley Trout Unlimited Chapter newsletter that will be coming out twice a month on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month.

Christmas For Coho

TVTU and the Clackmas chapter will be out collecting Christmas trees on January 4, and 11, 2020.  We will be collecting trees from 9 am to 4 pm at Northwest Fly Fishing Outfitters (10910 NE Halsey Street, Portland, OR 97220) and Old Fire Station Next to Royal Treatment Fly Fishing (6000 Failing St., West Linn, OR 97068).

FFACS Second Director Needed 

You might well ask “what is FFACS?” TVTU and several other clubs make up the Fly Fishing Arts and Conservation Society, which puts on the Fly Tyers Rendezvous each November. Each member club receives a portion of the proceeds to distribute to a resource conservation organization (this year ours went to the Deschutes River Alliance for efforts to improve the river quality conditions on the lower Deschutes). The Rendezvous invites a number of skilled tyers demonstrating their talents and includes raffles, a silent auction, and other draws. It is a very worthwhile event.

TVTU currently has one Director (Mike Gentry) on the FFACS Board, and would like to add one more of our members as a Director following the resignation of our second Director after many years of service. The FFACS Board meets three or four times a year to plan and organize the event, so the work load is not burdensome. Your Tualatin Valley TU Chapter could use a couple of additional Board members.  The job description is pretty simple.  The Board meets monthly at 6 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month (some months with no meeting needed) in the downstairs meeting room at the American Legion Hall in Tigard.  Meetings usually last an hour or a bit more.  TVTU has been quite successful in recent years, with projects such as the Christmas for Coho efforts and with good attendance at effective and entertaining Chapter meetings held most months at the Lucky Lab in Multnomah Village.  But we can always use fresh energy and fresh ideas.  If you are interested and would like to come to one of the Board meetings to test the water (barbless hook only), please contact Mike Gentry at  michaelgentry04@comcast.net or (503) 636-0061.  This is a feel-good volunteer opportunity.

Regular chapter meetings are held at the Lucky Labrador Public House 7675 SW Capitol Hwy. Portland, OR 97219 (503) 244-2537.  Food and beverage are available.  Social get together starts at 6:30 pm and the formal meeting starts at 7:00 pm unless otherwise noted in the newsletter or website.
 

December Meeting - Dec. 11, 2019  - Marc Williamson - The Art and Science of Fishing Spring Creeks
 

The Art and Science of Fishing Spring Creeks...My first fly fishing experience was on Fall River in Central Oregon.  You could say that I cut my (fly fishing) teeth on spring creeks.  Spring creeks have always been fascinating to me not only to fish but to understand.  Having fished Fall River for so many years, and having spent so much time learning to read and to fish rivers, I decided that it would be fun to get more specific and learn more about spring creeks.  I began with the knowledge base that I had and then I started researching and reading as many books as I could that were specific to spring creeks.  After a few years of researching spring creeks, in general, I decided to put that information into a format that could be presented to others in hopes that my research and knowledge would benefit them in their quest for fly fishing spring creeks where ever they go.  

I started fishing Fall River when I was about seven years old and have loved it ever since.  

January Meeting - Jan. 8  Jeff Morgan: Winter Fly Fishing for Trout

Jeff's program will be about how winter flyfishing differs significantly in terms of ecology and presentation from "normal season" (March-October) fishing. It is not simply a function of fishing different flies, it requires an entirely different approach to the fishing experience. We will cover both streams and stillwaters, with a specific focus on Oregon Cascade and Willamette Valley fisheries.
