Fly of the Month - Lightning Bug

Written by Mike Gentry.

I'm not sure the name really fits this fly, but that's what I know it by.  I discovered it on a trip to Montana when I was having a slow day on the Yellowstone and a fly-tier friend of mine said "try this".  She had always had great success on it, either as the only fly or as a dropper.  And the rainbows and browns proved her right that day.

Hook: Tiemco 101 BL, size 16
Thread:  Red 8/0
Beadhead:  Silver 1/8 inch
Tail and Legs: Pheasant tail
Body: Silver holographic tinsel
Shellback (optional): A drop of quick-drying epoxy

1. Affix the beadhead in place with a number of turns of thread behind the bead.

2. Tie in a tail of four pheasant tail fibers, the tail the length of the body.

3.  With thread wraps, build a slight tapered underbody from the tail to the back of the bead.

4.  Tie in a strand of tinsel just behind the bead, wrap back to the beginning of the bend of the hook, and then back to just behind the bead, and tie off.  Holographic (faceted) tinsel seems to work the best, but if not available, flat silver tinsel will also work.

5. Tie in the legs (3-4 pheasant tail fibers) on each side of the fly, the length just short of the end of the body.

6. Tie in a small thorax just behind the back of the bead (it's OK to wrap peacock herl over a little of the legs where they are tied in), and finish with several wraps of thread so the red thread shows up against the back of the bead.

7. If a shellback is desired, place a drop of epoxy on top of the thorax.  I've had success with and without it. Notice of Special Meeting of Members

Notice is given for a TVTU Chapter Special Meeting of Members for the purpose of voting on amendments to the Chapter’s Bylaws.  The proposed substantive amendments are as follows:

  • Providing for a 2/3 vote by the Chapter’s Board members in attendance at any Board meeting in order to remove any Officer.  This amendment is to conform the Chapter Bylaws to the current TU Model Bylaws provision.
  • Providing that the Board will elect its Officers at the Board meeting following the Annual Members Meeting, from nominations made by the Nominating Committee.  This amendment is to provide that the Board rather than the Members elect the Officers.
  • Providing that the President and Treasurer sign all checks over $500.  This amendment is to raise the dual signature amount from the current $200 figure.
  • Providing that all Officers are limited to two consecutive two year terms in the same office but can hold the same office again after a one year period out of office.  This amendment is to conform the Chapter Bylaws to the current TU Model Bylaws provision.
  • Providing that the Chapter’s fiscal year runs from April 1 to March 31.  This amendment is to conform to the changed fiscal year adopted by TU.
  • Providing that the quorum for any Members meeting at which the Bylaws are amended is the lesser of thirty Chapter members or ten percent of the Chapter’s membership.  This amendment is to conform the Chapter Bylaws to the current TU Model Bylaws provision.
